Ella does not drink milk. Ever since she was weaned at 14 months, she has refused milk. All milk. Cow’s milk, chocolate milk, soy and rice, original, vanilla, chocolate, nothing. She takes a sip and spits it out. Apparently, I produce some delicious milk and nothing can compare.
I give her calcium supplements as our pediatrician recommended and she loves cheese and yogurt, so I make sure she gets plenty of those, but I still worry she’s not getting enough calcium. She has osteoporosis on both sides of the family, so I feel it’s in her best interest to drink milk. Plus, I’m all about the dairy, and milk is bar none my favorite drink. I just don’t understand what’s not to like. What could be better than an ice cold glass of milk?
Today in the grocery store there was a sample of a chocolate supergreen powder. I like samples, so I tried. It was pretty good and chocolate-y. I thought it might be a good way to get some greens into my diet. Plus those micronutrients they put in the drinks are supposed to be really good for you. My girls also both love the superfood drink by Odwalla , so I thought maybe they would like this. Looking at the label, it had only 30 calories and no sugar, so great. Then the instructions said to mix it with milk. They had it mixed with rice milk at the store and it was very good. I thought maybe Ella would go for it.
We got home and I mixed it with regular milk. Lo and behold, Ella drank it! Granted, she only drank half a glass all day, but that’s better than nothing. I tried some with my milk too. It honestly was a little grainy and had that wheatgrass taste to it. Not my favorite. I’ll try mixing it differently tomorrow and see if I can get rid of that taste. But, Ella seemed to like it as is. Maybe I’ve just killed two birds with one stone, milk plus greens, could it be?
Is there anything your kids avoid eating that you would really like them to?
