Changes Afoot

You may have noticed some changes in the appearance of the blog recently.  I’ve been trying to figure out where I want this blog to go for quite some time now.  Mulling things over and deciding if I need to start another blog or just have one blog that maybe doesn’t fit in to a neat little label.

When I first started blogging, a little over a year ago, I just wanted to write.  Having a creative outlet, and maybe keep some family members updated about my kids was an added bonus.  At the end of the day, though, I want to write. Not only a blog, but fiction, and be published for writing fiction.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading about author blogs and the importance of building a platform and a brand, even pre-book.  I’ve been obsessively reading Kristen Lamb’s blog as well as her book, We Are Not Alone—The Writer’s Guide to Social Media.   She talks a lot about making it easy for potential readers to find you, like using your name in your blog title and putting your name in the tags of your posts.  So the question remained, do I start another blog dedicated to building an author platform for the potential day far in the future when I might be published, or do I just use this one?  And if I start another blog, what in the world do I blog about?

Really, I don’t want to do two blogs. Far too much work.  But, I want to write about writing and reading and healthy living and eating and being vegan, and that doesn’t so much fit into a “mommy blog”. I decided to stick with one blog, but make it more branded to me.  A new design helped with that.  See, there’s my name right up there in the header.  But still, I hesitated to write outside my kids or occasional healthy stuff.

And then yesterday, I read Kludgy Mom’s post, Do You Need A Blog Niche? Her answer, no. Her blog does not fit nicely into one niche, and that’s okay.  So that sealed it for me. I will be writing about what I want to write about.  Which will definitely still include my kids.  But there will be some new things too.  Things I’m learning about being a writer and crafting a story, maybe some books I really like, probably some healthy life style stuff.  I’m teetering about the fiction Fridays, not sure if I’m getting out of it what I want or if it’s doing anything helpful for the blog.  Who knows, maybe I’ll write about sports. I don’t watch sports or care for them overall, but things change. And if I suddenly develop an interest in sports, then I’ll write about sports.

I guess what I’m saying is I’m branching out.  There will be some new topics in the near future. I’ll be testing the waters and seeing what I like and what you like and what fits. So I hope you hang in there with me while I go through some growing pains. I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to read what I write.  And please, please feel free to leave comments saying what you like or don’t like.  I love feedback (and comments).

I think you made a good choice. Who wants to be backed into a corner or fit someone else’s expectations? I struggled with the same thing. Had a blog, it was growing, couldn’t “define” it, and deleted it. Just dropped it. Now, I’m doing what I want with it regardless. Good luck to you!

I struggled with this too, and eventually started a second blog purely for the purposes of writing. I think a lot of it had to do with making sure that the things I wrote could stay more… private and directed, that is, I didn’t want to post some of the grittier things I write about on my main blog. And still, I struggle on my main blog with having so many different… directions. Student life. OCD. Kids. I finally just decided to write what I wanted.

Trust yourself. You know what you want to do here, as a writer and a blogger. It’s your space.

Thanks for stopping by my TRDC weekend linkup!

Thanks! I toyed with the starting a second blog for just that reason. And there are still some things that I won’t feel comfortable posting here. I can always change my mind if I feel it’s not working, I guess. Thanks for stopping by!
