Dear Ella Bean,
Today you turn three years old. I can hardly believe how fast the time has gone. I’m not great at writing these letters, so I think I’ll just talk about who you are right now.
I think the first word most people would use to describe you is spunky. Fiesty. A real firecracker. You have a temper and you will use it. This year has seen some truly epic temper tantrums. They’re getting better, and by that I mean less frequent and shorter. People tell me I’m going to have my hands full when you’re a teenager. I’m hoping we’re just working it out now.
You’re also a little mischievous. You like to get into things you know you’re not supposed to. You’ll climb the bookcase to get something I put out of your reach. You’ll scale the kitchen counters to get food I put out of reach. You’ll deliberately take something away from your sisters just to see their reaction. If they don’t notice you have one of their favorite toys, you’ll point it out and then run with it.
You are strong willed and stubborn. You want to do what you want when you want to do it. If you don’t want to do something, no amount of bribery will work. You have even refused chocolate because you didn’t want to do something simple, like use the potty before we go to the store.
A lot of these traits people see as a negative, but I think they’re some of your best qualities.
I know where I stand with you. I know if you’re angry, you’re going to express that to me. If you’re happy, you laugh. If you’re feeling lovey, you hug and kiss and tell me you love me. I hope you always feel comfortable expressing your feelings to me and whoever else comes into your life. It’s a good thing to do.
I know you have strong opinions and you’re not likely to do something you don’t think is a good thing. Keep that up. You stand your ground when someone is trying to get you to do something that’s not right. You tell them, in your loudest voice, if they’re not being nice. Do what your heart tells you to do.
Because you have a good heart, Little One. I have seen you comfort your sisters when they’re upset. You’ve beaten me to Sammy more than once when she was upset and I’ve found you patting her head, hugging her, and telling her it’ll be okay. You’ve done the same for me when I’ve had a bad day.
I am just amazed every day at your strength, your wit, and above all, your sweetness. I’m proud to be your mama and I can’t wait to see how you own three.
