Penelope is still in the hospital, and therefore, so am I. We have been here for a week now. We entered the emergency room at 11 last Friday and have not left since. We should be discharged today around 4 pm. I hope.
Penelope is doing well. Her foot is much better. She’s walking on it, which she wasn’t last Friday. She can’t support her full weight for very long, so she has a tiny little walker that she runs around with. She’s quite the star of the pediatric floor when she’s doing her laps so we can at least get out of the room for a bit.
She also has a PICC line. It’s a catheter that runs from just above her elbow to the major vessel just above her heart. It allows us to continue her very strong IV antibiotics at home and won’t need to be replaced for months if needed. She’ll likely only need it a couple of weeks. She can also have her blood drawn from it, so no more pokes and bruised up arms and legs.
It is going to be a long couple of weeks though. She needs two antibiotics, one given every 6 hours and one every 8 hours. The 4 time a day antibiotic needs to be given over an hour to hour and a half. Basically it works out that she is being given something every couple of hours. I’m not looking forward to the interrupted sleep at all.
We caught the infection early, so it should clear pretty easily and not result in any long term side effects.
One of these days I’ll post some pictures of her hospital stay, but right now, I’m going to get some rest while I can.
