This week’s Write On Edge (formerly The Red Dress Club) was to write a story in 140 characters. I admit, I cheated. I wrote this for NYC Midnight‘s Tweet Me a Story Contest earlier in the year, so some of you may have seen it before. It’s 135 characters. His finger slid down the knife’s edge and into his mouth. The salty tang of blood whet his appetite. There would be more death tonight.
“All right, class, settle down. Today’s class we’ll be continuing with our sex ed week by discussing birth control.” Paige sank in her desk, pulling her hooded sweatshirt further over her lap. She looked sideways at her classmates squirming in their seats around her. Mrs. Connor continued. “Now there are a variety of birth control options available. Some prevent pregnancy. Some prevent STDs. Who can tell me what STD stands for from Monday’s class?” Uncomfortable giggles surrounded Paige who stared at her desk, avoiding eye contact with Mrs. Connor. Alice laid on the floor, holding the proof sheet up to the light. After hours of scanning photos, all the images looked the same. The model’s smile slightly bigger or smaller, one foot an inch farther ahead or behind, her white skirt billowing more or less in the artificial breeze created by the fan. Alice wondered why she spent so much time fretting over whether number five conveyed the whimsy she was going for better than number forty-five.
