We had Ella’s birthday party yesterday. Her birthday isn’t until May 12th, but with Mother’s Day and us vacationing in Hawaii, this was the best weekend to do it. We went to Adventureplex. If you’re in the South Bay area, well worth going. Think of a giant McDonald’s playland structure except nice with padded floors and beams, not plastic, and fully enclosed in netting. You go, let the kids go, sit back, and don’t see them again for two hours. Plus there’s a nice area for kids under three. We used to have the girls’ parties at our house. [...]

Happy Girls Day! March 3rd is Girls Day in Japan. The day is set aside to celebrate little girls and wish them happiness, growth, and luck in the coming year. It began a really long time ago (I’m too lazy to look up when right now) when people believed some dolls possessed the ability to capture evil spirits. I’ve mentioned before that I love watching the process of language acquisition. I think it’s so cool to see how children learn an entire language from just hearing it and how they go through the same stages, babbling, single words, short sentences, long sentences, and even nuances. Samantha is learning some nuances right now, and they’re hilarious. She’s picking up colloquialisms from various people. She’s learned how to throw an uff-da into the conversation appropriately from me (that would be Norwegian and commonly heard in Minnesota). I’ve discovered it’s not that easy to use correctly.
